The inventory is mainly based on industry data and is completed, where necessary, by secondary data. All the datasets represent an average of representative components, based on materials applied in average on the selected component and modelled via typical, representative, manufacturing processes.99The data set represents global average conditions by applying chinese local reference. The data set is based on the main technologies currently in use as well as industry material specifications and relevant statistics.The component name contains information regarding the specification of the assembly line, e.g. through hole technology (THT) and/or surface mounted device (SMD); number and type of the applied machines; and throughput per hour.
The assembly line merges all semi finished products, products and manufacturing steps for a populated PWB, i.e. solder process and assembly step. The main important machines are (abbreviations applied for the machines in the 'technology' field in the processes are given in brackets): Screen printer (SP) (printing of solder paste onto a PWB), chip shooter (CS) (placing of components on the created solder dots; high velocity, simple components), chip placer (CP) (placing of components on the created solder dots; high precision of placement, fine pitch components such as ICs), THT placer (THTP) (if required for cutting and placing of wired components), reflow oven (Rf) (application of heat (infrared, convection, conduction) for melting of the solder paste, soldering of components), wave solder bath/oven (WO) (for THT, wetting of the PWB by pulling the PWB over a solder wave which is provided on the surface of the solder bath), assembly robot (R) (for special and complicated placing and handling processes, e.g. placing a populated PWBA into a product housing). These machines consume power and demand pressurized air. Additionally auxiliaries are consumed as well, e.g. typically isopropanol and cleaning agents (cleaning from solder pastes) and nitrogen (to provide for an inert atmosphere during soldering in the reflow oven). Also the consumption of solder and solder paste which remains in the product is factorized that calculates the solder dross and the wasted solder paste (e.g. from drying in bins or on the screen and cleaning). Beside the energy consumption of the machines an average power consumption and thermal energy consumption for overheads is calculated. Finally, process emissions emerge which are derived from evaporation of cleaning agents and from evaporation of fillers and fluxes during soldering. The most relevant influence on the consumptions is the throughput. Therefore two operating points have been chosen, 300 and 600 boards per day (300 and 600 pieces/h are corresponding to an 18" x 24" PWB array).
The model for the assembly line regards the consumption of auxiliaries and the energy consumption of the machines as well as process emissions. The consumptions are dependent on the throughput. Different lines have been modelled according to the kind and number of machines. The demand of pressurized air and power is adapted to those:
SMD simple: 1 screen printer (SP), 1 chip shooter (CS), 1 reflow oven (Rf);
SMD complex: 1 screen printer (SP), 2 chip shooter (CS), 1 chip placer (CP), 1 robot (R), 1 reflow oven (Rf);
Mixed THT/SMD line: 1 screen printer (SP), 1 THT placer (TP), 1 chip shooter (CS), 1 wave solder oven (WO), 1 reflow oven (Rf);
The energy consumptions for overheads are not dependent on the throughput, because the optimisation of the throughput of the line is assumed.
Background system:
Electricity: Electricity is modelled according to the individual country-specific situations. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly, individual energy carrier specific power plants and plants for renewable energy sources are modelled according to the current national electricity grid mix. Modelling the electricity consumption mix includes transmission / distribution losses and the own use by energy producers (own consumption of power plants and "other" own consumption e.g. due to pumped storage hydro power etc.), as well as imported electricity. Secondly, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled as well as the share of electricity plants and combined heat and power plants (CHP). Thirdly, the country-specific energy carrier supply (share of imports and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific energy carrier properties (e.g. element and energy content) are accounted for. Fourthly, the exploration, mining/production, processing and transport processes of the energy carrier supply chains are modelled according to the specific situation of each electricity producing country. The different production and processing techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different energy producing countries are considered, e.g. different crude oil production technologies or different flaring rates at the oil platforms.
Thermal energy, process steam: The thermal energy and process steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to emission standards and considered energy carriers. The thermal energy and process steam are produced at heat plants. Efficiencies for thermal energy production are by definition 100% in relation to the corresponding energy carrier input. For process steam the efficiency ranges from 85%, 90% to 95%. The energy carriers used for the generation of thermal energy and process steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity above).
Transports: All relevant and known transport processes are included. Ocean-going and inland ship transport as well as rail, truck and pipeline transport of bulk commodities are considered.
Energy carriers: The energy carriers are modelled according to the specific supply situation (see electricity above).
Refinery products: Diesel fuel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, lubricants and residues such as bitumen are modelled with a parameterised country-specific refinery model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refining techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption, etc.) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific situation with the respective properties of the resources.Water (deionised)Nitrogen (gaseous)IsopropanolElectricity grid mixProvision of a standard technical product according to the applied technology, e.g. component or process for the composition of an electronic function represented by printed wiring board.Electronics_GLO_General flow diagram of assembly line.jpgPartly terminated systemAttributionalNoneAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - market valueFOREGROUND system: None.
