The declared unit is the production and end of life of a cubic meter (1 m3) raw Kaindl flakeboards with 3 different coatings, each of 1m2. The coatings are melamine, veneer and CPL.
The data was collected for production sites Lungötz and Salzburg in Austria, which represents 100% of the production volume of the declared products of M. Kaindl Holzindustrie.
Products are used for furniture, interior work as well as booth and store construction.119The dataset represents the specific situation for one producer in Austria.Foreground system: The system boundaries comprise the cradle to gate life cycle (A1-A3 incl. A5) in the year 2009-2010. In case of specific electricity or steam supply, these systems are built up in GaBi models. The LCI dataset considers the production of the flake boards and the coatings, as well as disposal of packaging (A5). Transport to customer (A4) is not included.
Transportation processes for the raw materials are accounted for as far as data on average transport distances were available.
All relevant material and energy flows were included in the system. Life cycle impacts of production equipment and infrastructure were not included in the system as no evidence could be justified that these are to any extent relevant and thus fell under the cut-off criteria. In mass production the impact of production equipment and infrastructure normally is in orders of magnitude lower than the impacts of material and energy supply.
Background system is addressed as follows: Electricity, Thermal energy: The electricity (and thermal energy as by-product) used is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation. The country-specific modelling is achieved on multiple levels. Firstly the individual power plants in service are modelled according to the current national grid. This includes net losses and imported electricity. Second, the national emission and efficiency standards of the power plants are modelled. Third, the country-specific fuel supply (share of resources used, by import and / or domestic supply) including the country-specific properties (e.g. element and energy contents) are accounted for. Fourth, the import, transport, mining and exploration processes for the energy carrier supply chain are modelled according to the specific situation of each power-producing country. The different mining and exploration techniques (emissions and efficiencies) in the different exploration countries are accounted for according to current engineering knowledge and information. Steam: The steam supply is modelled according to the individual country-specific situation with regard to the technology efficiencies and energy carriers used. Efficiencies range from 84% to 94% in relation to the representative energy carrier (gas, oil, coal). Coal, crude oil and natural gas used for the generation of steam are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Transports: All relevant and known transport processes used are included. Overseas transport including rail and truck transport to and from major ports for imported bulk resources are included. Furthermore all relevant and known pipeline and / or tanker transport of gases and oil imports are included. Energy carriers: Coal, crude oil, natural gas and uranium are modelled according to the specific import situation (see electricity). Refinery products: Diesel, gasoline, technical gases, fuel oils, basic oils and residues such as bitumen are modelled via a country-specific, refinery parameterized model. The refinery model represents the current national standard in refinery techniques (e.g. emission level, internal energy consumption,...) as well as the individual country-specific product output spectrum, which can be quite different from country to country. Hence the refinery products used show the individual country-specific use of resources. The supply of crude oil is modelled, again, according to the country-specific crude oil situation with the respective properties of the resources."Products are used for furniture, interior work as well as booth and store construction.LCI resultAttributionalNoneAllocation - market valueAllocation - net calorific valueAllocation - exergetic contentAllocation - massFOREGROUND system:
Credits due to energetic usage in the biomass power plant take place according to calorific value of the input, also considering the efficiency of the plant.
Credits for thermal energy are calculated according to dataset "EU-25: Thermal energy from natural gas PE", credits for electricity from the dataset "EU-25: electicity mix PE"
Calculation of emissions depending on input (CO2, HCl, SO2 or heavy metals) at the end of life took place according to material composition. Technology dependent emissions (such as CO) were calculated based on exhaust emission. Waste was attributed completely to production
Upstream chain for forest was balanced after Hasch 2002. Impact from scrap wood from saw mills was attributed to the lumbering process according to volume, no impact were attributed to scrap wood from saw mill processes.
For waste wood no impact from upstream chains was attributed. Impact for shredding as well as transport (30% wood humidity) from waste wood dealer to production site were calculated.
BACKGROUND system: For the combined heat and power production, allocation by exergetic content is applied. For the electricity generation and by-products, e.g. gypsum, allocation by market value is applied due to no common physical properties. Within the refinery allocation by net calorific value and mass is used. For the combined crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids production allocation by net calorific value is applied. For details please see the document "GaBi Databases Modelling Principles"NoneThe cut-off criteria were set in accordance with the relevant ISO standard 14040 as follows:
All gathered datawas considered, also smaller than 1%.
The sum of the neglected material flows does not exceed 5 % of mass, energy or envi-ronmental relevance. Cut-off criteria have been applied on unit processes and not on calculated inventories.NoneFor the modelling of the life cycle for the production of flakeboards primary data collected by Kaindl for one year was used. All other relevant background datasets were taken from the software GaBi 4 from thinkstep. Last revision of used background datasets occured less than 10 years ago. Reference area is Austria.NoneData was collected and treated to ensure the resulting inventory is representative of the company providing the data. Data from one one company was collected, over one year. The datset is representative for the state of technology in 2010 and should be reviewed for technological change in 10 years.NoneGaBi databases 2006100.0This dataset contains only the life cycle stages cradle to gate.
